Notifying findable phones

Subscribers sometimes ask why we send messages to phones whose locations the Sprint Family Locator account holder wants to see. While we understand there are times when parents would like to keep tabs on kids from “behind the scenes,” both Safely and Sprint (and all wireless carriers) have implemented this feature in order to abide by FCC guidelines, which seek to prevent someone from using this app (and others like it) inappropriately, for instance to secretly track another adult, with the intent to harm.

Here’s what this means for you:

  • During the registration process, as soon as you add a phone to the list of those whose locations you can see, that phone will receive this text message: “You can be located by the following numbers: [ACCOUNT HOLDER’S NUMBER].”
  • After that, every phone you can find will randomly receive this same text message, once a month or so, reminding the phone's owner that they can be located.
  • Besides this random reminder, phones you’re locating will not know they’re located every time you use the service, unless you sign in via the web and go to Manage account, then Account preferences, then Child notifications, and choose Every locate, rather than Occasional reminders.
